Our Story

Eshi Utopia is a marketplace created with a goal of bridging the gap between homeland creatives and the Ethiopian diaspora community. The founders Henok Tadesse and Ted Alemayhu came up with this collaborative medium as a means to honor and celebrate their roots while at the same time provide creatives back home a platform where they can showcase their artistic works internationally through a marketplace. 

The inspiration behind our name is Awra Amba ("Top of the Hill") - an Ethiopian intentional community located in Debub Gondar Zone and founded by Zumra Nuru. This little Ethiopian village is a model not only for its surrounding villages, but for the world. Awra Amba community, often dubbed by social researchers as the Ethiopian Utopia, has members who work together, are diligent, disciplined and self-confident - traits that makes them distinct from other communities. Zumra Nuru founded this community back in 1980 with an idea that if people lived at peace with nature and with each other, they stood a better chance to live at peace with themselves.
